The next night we stayed on a farm and met a chap who had been educated there. It was good to hear his story.

They seem to have opted for the harder of the two jobs. And no wonderful smells of just-baked bread any longer. I call that mortifying the flesh.

It’s disappointing that they no longer bake their own bread. Actually, I find New Norcia a bit of a disappointment all round. We were shocked at the cost of the camping there – and not even a loo. I appreciate the history of the place, but I was disappointed that they seem to be repeating history with the extortion from the people that the church has been infamous for since the Middle Ages. Now I’ll get off my soap box!

Fascinating place to visit but you don’t want to see what’s been swept under the carpet.
