Day 8 Tuesday 20/12/2022 Portland, sunny 12 – 21
Washing day. It’s not every day that you eat breakfast while happily watching someone jump off a cliff. Yes, those hang gliders are at it again.
Woody walks into town to shop while I clean the van.

After lunch, we take a drive out to Cape Nelson. The lighthouse here is undergoing a facelift. It’s unusual to see a lighthouse surrounded by scaffolding so we’re not at all disappointed. There’s a cute stone café that is currently hosting a Xmas function and the school house. Beyond that the head keeper’s cottage and a duplex pair that houses the assistant keepers.

On our return, we stop to photograph the rather cute 1841 Steam Packet Inn then drive out the other side of town towards Narrawong where many homes are built behind the low dunes. Those views must be priceless.

Very stylish Keeper’s Cottage but I imagine the weather is rather rough around there at times.

Windy and probably a day’s ride into Portland for supplies.

I could manage a view like that from the keepers’ cottages!

But oh what an isolated life they must have had.
