Yackety Yack, Day 41 – Oh the joy of a level site

Day 41 Sunday 18/6/2023 Pomona to Maryborough, 8 – 24

With the legs up for a quick getaway, the van was a bit wobbly last night. It’s a clear cold morning. I don’t know what was in that chicken schnitzel last night but it sure wasn’t chicken. Why? Well, Woody was talking in his sleep and I couldn’t sleep for his ramblings and my rumblings.

Someone disconnects VeeWee’s water hose during the night. Even so, she still beats us to leave.

We follow the Old Bruce Highway up to the Kandanga junction where Elle pulls in to top up on fuel. We wait 20 minutes in the sun as it seems that everyone is buying their morning snacks before leaving the pumps. Whatever happened to fuel pump etiquette. At least we’re not in a hurry, we’re too busy checking out the dimensions of the box on someone’s caravan bumper. VeeWee reckons she could do with one of those. We pass through Gympie and make a short detour to see VeeWee’s sister and her partner for morning tea. She has a gum treed 1.25 acre block and grows bromeliads, when not fossicking for gemstones. Not bad for an octogenarian eh?

Back on the road, the traffic is erratic with blatant disregard for double lines. It’s a relief to arrive at the Maryborough Showgrounds and escape the Sunday drivers.

This park is huge and there’s a gymkhana on. We’ve booked online and there are plenty of level sites to choose from. Unlike Pomona, all the sites are level. We choose larger sites at the back. R&T pop in to say g’day, they’re camped at nearby Hervey Bay.

We sit outside until dark as the evening is warmer here and the air is delightfully dry.

Dinner is a pork stir fry and finally, at last, thank God, we finish the bloody chocolate mousse.
