Flinders Ranges – Sketches of Wilpena Station

Wilpena Pound, Flinders Ranges, SA

Nestled within the shelter of the ring of ranges that is Wilpena Pound, the sheep and cattle station operated for 135 years in what can only be described as a stunning setting. A community within itself and completely isolated from the outside world by its geography, it once covered an area of 825 square miles. Such independence is hard for us to comprehend these days, but the station folk of those days had to be self-sufficient, growing their own food, making their own tools, leathergoods and clothes, and of course building their own cottages and sheds. Wilpena is an excellent example of the difficulties of life for those who came before us.
