Day 6 Friday 22/11/2024 Rochester, 15 – 36 Hot
It was a pleasantly warm night with most of the windows and even the door open. It’s already 26 degrees at breakfast. The town fire siren goes off, there must be a grass fire somewhere. Woody has two walks around town before it gets too hot. We laze about like old cats enjoying the heat yet not moving. When Woody says that he doesn’t feel like lunch, my response is that a cold beer would go down well. And you know what? It was perfect.
After our liquid lunch we drive over to Lockington to try the renowned ice creams mentioned on the local brochures, only to find that the shop is long gone. A packaged ice cream from the supermarket fills the longing. We camped overnight here a few years ago and it was a top spot with power, water, toilets, showers, BBQ’s and gardens. The town must be doing a good trade with RV’ers as the previous 4 powered sites has now morphed into 24! Good on ‘em it’s a delightful town with the irrigation channel having been landscaped into a water feature. We return through dairy farms rich with grass and contented Jersey cows.
The heat gets to us and Toothless extracts a couple of pool noodles from behind the washing machine where they normally act as packing, and we slide into the river from the ramp for disabled kayakers. The river, though greenish brown does not smell muddy and is so refreshing.

Happy hour is on the lawn again in the shade of the gum trees until the heat sends us into the air-conditioned camp kitchen. No one is up to cooking so we ring for pizzas and then wish we’d made more of an effort.
I think we’re in for a hot night.
