Ayson’s Reserve is on the Campaspe River near Elmore. This used to be the site of the Elmore Field Days before they built a new facility with an airstrip and modern sheds. The reserve has flushing toilets and space for about a hundred vans. It can get busy, but when it’s quiet it is a lovely laid back river camp. Water is available in Elmore.

Euroa. This town was blessed when the Hume Highway was diverted to the east. The many gracious buildings have been preserved. The caravan park straddles the Seven Creeks waterway and the exceptionally good Seven Creeks Hotel that has been serving delicious meals for decades is beside the caravan park, a mere stagger away. Worthy of a beer for the sake of quirkiness, is the North Eastern Hotel on the other side of town. You can’t miss it, because it’s the building that looks like it is being demolished. There are several kilometres of walking trails along the Seven Creeks too.

Longwood Recreation Reserve. Just off the Hume Highway Longwood is one of those forgotten towns. They do, however, provide a spacious area for overnighting in peace when heading north and there are flushing toilets. The town is peppered with hints of busier times and the pub looks tempting.

Rochester is a charming town, and the Riverside Caravan Park is a very short walk across the bridge from town. The park has large concrete slabs for both car and van with river views and plenty of green lawns. It’s worth the drive out to Colbinabbin to visit the silos and the Colbo pub meals cannot be beaten, this is not your average pub menu.

Lockington Travelers Rest. A number of towns provide RV stops, but this one must be popular as it seems to be growing faster than the town. Lockington has an IGA, a pub, and a museum. They’ve also landscaped the irrigation channel that runs through the town. The RV stop backs onto pleasant gardens, there is power, water, showers and toilets.

Bridgewater on Loddon. Heading up the Calder past Bendigo, Bridgewater Caravan Park is on the Loddon River. It too has expansive green lawns and river views. River walks, a pub and a popular bakery.

    1. No doubt you’ve noticed that we get almost as excited about green lawn as we do about toilets that flush. 😌 For parks on the coastal fringe (ie, the part of the country with the most population and decent rainfall) we do hope to see nice well tended lawns not gouged by tyres or patchy from over use. For everywhere else, we must take what we can get and I can tell you that the sight of just one blade of grass can bring a tear to the eye.
