A Cool Coast – Tiny Kisses and Showgrounds

Day 15 Saturday 28/6/2025, Murwillumbah, NSW, cool with misty rain 12 – 18

Woody slipped into town this morning and picked up some nice flaky pain au chocolat from Ben’s Patisserie for our breakfast. Ooh, they are good.

Showgrounds caretakers Pete and Donna do an amazing job here and they don’t miss a thing. Ex Cyclone Alfred brought them 3.7metres of rain back in March and the place is neat as a pin again. I just thought I’d mention that there’s a gecko somewhere in the toilet block as he makes those little ‘kiss kiss’ sounds when one answers the call of nature. Cute little fellas.

One of the reasons that showgrounds are popular with caravanners is that the sites are always very large. Pete guides our new neighbours onto their site, but they aren’t happy, they move their motorhome across the site to be right beside our windows. I reckon that they may want to join in our conversations as we can hear everything that they say*.

We take a short drive around town and fill up with fuel as we’ll be moving on tomorrow.

Dinner is a one pot spag bol. It’s a pleasant evening so after dinner we stroll up the hill and buy some ice cream to go with our fruit salad for dessert. The bowl has been growing with red paw paw, bananas (lady fingers and ducasse), and panama passionfruit. The restaurants in town are busy and there’s a steady beat of African drumming coming from somewhere. The fruit salad is pretty good.

*Showgrounds are a great option. They offer everything that grey nomads need except laundry facilities. Power, water, toilets and showers, and most have dump points. They’re usually close to town but much quieter. They’re often much cheaper than caravan parks and the money goes back to the local community. And best of all they often host events, equestrian activities, farmer’s markets, and chook shows.

Accom: $35.00

Queenslander Style farmhouse. Constructed of weatherboard, with a corrugated iron roof. Raised off the ground for airflow, and in this example the veranda is closed in. There’s an ornamental door to the veranda and lots of small swing out windows to control the breezes. It’s such a practical design that it would suit most mainland areas. And of course, if flood levels get too high the house can be jacked up a little higher for the future.

    1. The dump points are where we empty our toilet cassettes. The toilet waste cassette is about the size of a carry on wheelie case. Caravan parks often look like an airport car park with everyone heading to the dump point with their little cases.
