A Cool Coast – Stamping Our Feet to Keep Warm

Day 54 Thursday 7/8/2025 Wangaratta to Melbourne, frosty 2 degrees

We wake up to a crisp wintry morning. The caravan looks atrocious; washing is piled high and threatening to fall over, and everything needs a good scrub. But that is how the last day of travelling always looks for us and the old girl will soon be shiny and ready to go again.

We strike wispy fog patches around the Eildon weir area and far too many dead wombats. Has there been a drunken wombat party overnight?

At the tiny town of Yarck we stop for a coffee at The Giddy Goat café which we learn, and must remember, is only open on weekdays. It’s a great little outdoor café and today in the cold and mist they’re doing a roaring coffee trade. Stamping our feet to keep warm I snap photos for later sketches and Woody orders our brew. I can’t help but notice a farmer waiting at the counter looking rugged up and dry as a chip in his DrizaBone coat.

It will be nice to get home to a TV that works…

Home at last and guess what? The TV remote has died! There’s a speeding fine in the mail for being a couple of k’s over the 50Km limit in Macksville. And everyone tells us what a lovely mild winter they’ve had in Melbourne.

  1. Love the photos with the misty morning light. Nice sketches to note your passing through. And, don’t believe what the Melbourneites tell you about the mild winter. I’ve heard otherwise from family and friends. I’ve enjoyed travelling along with you. Thanks.
