Confessions of a Grey Nomad – The Places We Love

Mary Valley, Imbil and Kandanga, Qld

Imbil

Just across the ridge from Kenilworth you’ll find the town of Imbil. Situated on Yabba Creek the community offers showground camping. Imbil has a quirky pub and a few kilometres upstream is the Borumba Dam campground. An idyllic bushland campground. The last time we visited Imbil, a few years back, we had a good meal at the pub, though there was a large hole in the ceiling and the carpet was preventing my chair from slipping into the cellar. But as I said the meal was good and that’s all that matters.

Railway Hotel, Imbil. She’s a beauty.

Kandanga

Our favourite is the even quirkier town of Kandanga. A few k’s further north, it does have free camp, but we can never resist the Kandanga Bowls Club where you can have a powered site backing up to the bowling green. Your camping fee gives you club membership and access to the friendly clubhouse facilities, discounted drinks and meals to give you a break from cooking. If you are desperate for supplies Gympie isn’t that far away and has everything including the caravanner’s favourite, an Aldi. Check out the café at Kandanga Farm Store and have a coffee overlooking the paddocks. There may not be much in Kandanga, but it is a nice quiet place to spend a few nights and admire the cows.
