The Places we Love – Flaggy Rock

Rockhampton & the Capricorn Coast on hold

Regular readers will understand why I will leave Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast until a bit later. Basically, I get a little too excited about Rocky and the Cap Coast and it will take some restraint to reduce my description of this area to anything shorter than a novel. Hang in there we will get back to it.

Flaggy Rock, Qld

The first few times we drove from Rockhampton to Mackay it seemed to us like a long stretch of nothing. How wrong we were, and we still haven’t explored all of it. This 335km stretch has plenty to offer.

We turned off the Bruce Highway to follow the directions to Flaggy Rock Community and Recreation Centre at Flaggy Rock Road, Carmila and discovered a peaceful hide away. So peaceful that we stayed an extra night. The old primary school property now hosts community groups, and caravanners can park on the extensive and well cared for grounds. Like many Queensland schools the buildings have shady areas to sit underneath and when we visited a local resident was busy stocking shelves with jams and chutneys. As you can imagine we bought far more than we should have, but even that was not enough. It was that good!

Facility wise, there aren’t any powered sites or water hookup, but when you see the place, you will understand, that doesn’t matter in the least. There are toilets and showers, a camp kitchen and …wait for it… a heated swimming pool that is kept spotless by the onsite caretakers.

Flaggy Rock is truly one of the great freedom camps.

  1. Flaggy Rock sounds a great place to stay. I’ve been to several places north of Brisbane, but never there. I am looking forward to a short road trip with a long-time friend and Kerry, outside of Melbourne, to Rutherglen and then Daylesford/Hepburn Springs. No camper van, but a camping ground. There will be much to report on once back home. All the best for a good Christmas, and I look forward to reading about more travels next year.
