On the Road Again 2026 – Day 3 Moss Vale

Day 3 Wednesday 10/6/2026, Gundagai to Moss Vale, cloudy 10 – 18 breezy too

A mild grey morning, and it’s a battle to keep the autumn leaves out of the caravan.

We’re on the road by 8:45. The paddocks are green and the dams full. This is excellent grazing land. Once more we climb, rolling hill, after rolling hill. It’s funny how your body knows that it is travelling north. We top up the fuel again at Yass.

The highway is still eerily quiet until we reach the Canberra turn off near Goulburn. Now it’s much busier, more people and traffic bustling about, there’s the occasional old Georgian building, smaller farms and forests.

We’re in the Southern Highlands now, traffic is building and we turn east through the village of Sutton Forest and on to Moss Vale. The road is lined with perfectly manicured properties and grand homes so desirable that one can almost smell the money.

We stop for a break in Moss Vale for some urgent business a) some cash for our accommodation, b) a walk, and c) a tub of ice cream! The traffic has us on edge. The Main Street here is a connector road to the industrial cities of Port Kembla and Wollongong on the coast. Tripping through the autumn leaves we hurry back to the van…the ice cream is in my backpack on top of a new sketchbook!

The showgrounds are around the corner, and we have a moment of stress when the caretaker tells us that they are full. This is the last caravan accommodation before the Sydney bypass motorway starts and, once you’re on that it’s pretty much go, go, go, until Newcastle. Thankfully a camper has left a day early and although the site is a tight fit we don’t have to unhitch the van. Galahs graze on the lawns, Woody goes for a walk, to Aldi, of course. And I sit inside out of the wind and sketch the house across the road. Dinner is a moussaka from home, and the sketchbook thankfully made it unscathed.
