There is a great phone app called Wikicamps that has become the campers’ bible. Not only does it give details, pictures and prices of camp sites and caravan parks but folks can upload their personal comments. This is invaluable as you can get a good idea as to whether a great spot is perhaps a little too dusty in the dry season or perhaps over crowded at present.
We leave the van out front and walk into the roadhouse / van park, which by the way is 150kms from anywhere in either direction. One of the ladies in charge shouts “guess you want a site for the night?” “Whad’ya reckon Mary, do we give ‘em one?” “Oh all right then. “ Says Mary. We were shown to our site then warned “When you leave the toilet close the door the brolgas poop in there and then people complain when they step in it. They don’t like brolga poop between their toes.” By this stage we are doing our best not to fall about laughing. These delightful old dears have perfected the Aussie sense of humour. I’m now eating lunch while a big grey brolga peers through the window at me, I daren’t eat outside or I’ll lose my sandwich.
In this instance I had looked up Wikicamps for the Kynuna roadhouse van park and as there was little else around I hadn’t bothered to read the comments. I later log in to post a comment of praise and find that folks have complained about the rude owners. Rude? Never, that’s a finely tuned Aussie Sense of humour! And they cook great chips.

The only downside to WikiCamps is that it doesn’t work without cell service haha. I tried to use it on my last roadtrip but we were in the Outback where cell service sucks. I will have to try again next time!

Can’t wait for the day that we get coverage everywhere. Pity the farmers in the outback. Love Wikicamps though.
