The Boab Prison Tree on the edge of Derby, WA is huge, squat, gnarled and old. Used as a lock up in the early days of European settlement it is estimated at about 1500 years of age. Boabs don’t have rings so a more accurate figure can’t be ascertained.


Now that really IS amazing. What a history that tree has …. and it’s not telling.

What a marvelous tree! In Greece we don’t have baobabs, but we do have olives and planes that are thousands of years old. I absolutely adore them. Why is it called the prison tree?
