The RAAF Bunker Museum at Mallacoota was built in World War 2 for radio surveillance of shipping in Bass Strait, this underground bunker played a pivotal role in assisting maritime convoys to negotiate the strait. Prior to this base being set up the Japanese had succeeded in sinking 22 ships in the area. The bunker also houses historical exhibits for the town of Mallacoota and Gabo Island.
Footnote: We visited this museum in 2012 not knowing that an older friend of ours was one of only two crew to have survived the sinking of a Merchant Navy vessel off the coast at Mallacoota during the war.
