Yackandandah Waterhole

Dec 2019, Yackandandah, Vic

On a hot afternoon we take a drive around town and out to Yackandandah Waterhole at Allan’s Flat. This quarry like swimming hole was formed by gold dredging in days gone by. The swimming hole is large, tree lined and popular with the locals in today’s heat. One group were standing around a surfboard, up to their chests in water chatting and using the surfboard as a floating bar for their beers. Now that’s using your noggin.

      1. Correct name as it was known when my father lived there from 1904 – 1922, Boron’s Lagoon. The children from the Allans Flat school were taken there to swim. Swimming was done naked back then. Women could swim Monday Wednesday Friday and the Men Tuesday Thursday and Saturday morning. Boys would be boys and would swim underwater and come up to watch the women! My two Uncles were almost drowned there as small children but were saved when an older boy noticed them clinging together bobbing up and down. My father always spoke fondly of Borons Lagoon.
