Day 5 Tuesday June 10th 2014 Holbrook to Moss Vale
We had a cold night last night the only sounds were that of the constant trucks and a lone mopoke calling. It is a bright clear morning and 6 degrees at 9:30. The sky is streaked with jet streams.
It is a long haul up the many hills to Yass and we average only 80kms/hour. We walk around Yass and admire the grand old buildings and huge old hotels. There are more hills before we reach Goulburn but in sight of the Big Ram there is a Bunnings store so we exchange a gas bottle, fill up with fuel at the Shell perfectly located under the Big Ram’s behind and we’re on our way again. Bunnings, Shell and the Big Ram, this is tourist heaven.
It starts to rain and we’re getting weary. Bendeela Reserve is too far away so Plan B will be Wingello State Park. Sadly, it looks like the road won’t be suitable in this weather so Plan C swings into action, the Moss Vale Caravan Park. We drive through the Southern Highlands towns of Bundanoon, gorgeous Bundanoon and Sutton Forest.
The caravan park is basic but very sloping. We walk into town to stretch our legs. It is wet but not cold. Night falls quickly and the old houses and shops are interesting, but the traffic is horrendous as this is the very narrow Illawarra Highway connecting the city of Wollongong on the coast to the Hume Highway.
Travelling Kms: 368Kms
Note: Melbourne Sydney jet streams, prior to the Covid 19 pandemic this was the world’s second busiest domestic air route.

Your post has reminded me that for the first time ever, I think, we didn’t head to a hardware store on our trip. 🙂

Once again we are into the realms of completely ridiculous made-up names. Yass? Wingella? Bundanoon? Don’t try and fool me …………..

Gosh I hadn’t thought of those as unusual however we never pass through Yass without singing “Yass, we have no bananas”.
