A Merry Mildura Xmas – Cricket on the Calder

Day 13 Friday 27/12/2024 Wedderburn to Home, 17 – low 20’s

At last, a refreshingly cool morning. This little town is quite interesting and it’s such a shame that yesterday was too hot to explore. And today, well we just want to get through the city and home. We grab some morning sustenance at Grist Bakery in Kyneton and pick up the Calder Highway again.

The morning is perfect for driving and there’s the burble of the cricket commentary on the radio to remind us that it is the summer holidays…”it’s a leg by, now following the discussion of potatoes, Oh, it’s hit the sausage for a 4!”.

Not being warm enough to be called a beach day, we ignore the freeway and take the more pleasant Beach Road around the bay to the Mornington Peninsula and we judge it right, traffic is light, people aren’t scrambling for parking spots. Families aren’t trying to cross the road with arm loads of children and towels and there aren’t any bronzed bodies wearing nothing but a few traffic-stopping string things. The old Bay looks good though.
