That’s right, Canberra the nation’s capital. The place of circular streets and perfection. A city devoid of advertising. Not one but two parliament houses, a flock of politicians, and a host of Commonwealth cars. Although we often make jokes about our capital it is throwing off its youth and growing into a beautiful city with grand tree-lined avenues, and a bevy of parks and gardens.
Unless they are well positioned, city caravan parks can be noisy, expensive, and cramped. The EPIC (Exhibition Park in Canberra) is basic but well managed and reasonably priced. It is a central base for touring the city and there’s a tram stop out front. Like all showgrounds, check first as it may be closed for a large event. If you’re there on a weekend check out the Farmer’s Market, it’s seriously good and sets up in one of the sheds. We were lucky to be in Canberra when Government House was open to the public and had a chance to tour the property and talk with the staff.
As we know there is so much to see in Canberra, galleries, museums and events, and while you’re in the area, the historic village of Braidwood is not far away and begging to be sketched.

We house sat in Canberra about 9 years ago and loved the place, I agree so much to see, but was so pleased the car we were given to use had a gps system.

Yeah, I can see why ballooning would be popular. If its anything like our seat of government – there’s a lot of hot air around. Nice post.

I’ve heard much about Canberra as my husband worked at the university for some time, before I knew him. He speaks nostalgically about it. The trees have added extra beauty. Great you’ve got space to park up too.

I was surprised at how much ANU had grown. And yes, we do like Showgrounds because they provide all that we grey nomads need. There’s also the side benefit of markets, equestrian events, even chook shows!

Driving through Canberra, I felt like I was trapped in the official district and would never find the city. But there’s plenty to keep you busy for a few hours, around the two parliaments.

Yes, the Walter Burley Griffin design can make one feel like being in a living maze. I’m still a huge fan of his planning though.
