Old Gold – Back to the Big Smoke

An amble through Victoria’s Goldfields region.

Day 11 Saturday 18/10/2025 Newstead to Home cloudy, 5 – 18

There’s a nip in the air this morning and I wake to a little voice asking if I can turn on the diesel heater (the switch is on my side of the bed).

We’ve all got things and appointments to get back to at home. The roads are quiet there’s a busy market on in Chewton and it’s hard to miss as cars are ‘abandoned’ along the narrow roadside and groups of people are chatting and drinking coffee.

As always, we turn off at Kyneton to grab a coffee at Grist and a couple of their heavy almond croissants for later.

On the Calder Highway there’s a fruiterer whose advertising signs every few hundred metres always give us a giggle. And they go something like this but there are more, many more:

Darwin Mangoes, Delicious Dates, Aussie Garlic, Free Hugs, Why not Darl?, Finally you’ve found paradise, Left here peeps.

Fuel: $50.00, Towing Kms: 195Kms

Summary

12 nights, 11 Days (1 night at home, sleep glorious sleep)

Accom: $190.00

Fuel: $221.09

Footnote: A few days later and feeling chipper, Woody suddenly comes down with gastro. He’s barely over it when it’s my turn. Did I detect a grin when I asked the doctor if this was going around?
