Day 31 Wednesday 8/7/2026 Lake Monduran, breezy 24

This is such a peaceful spot, we’ve decided to stay 2 more days. Two crested pigeons scurry across the grass incessantly chased by the male whom we’ve named Donald. We do our washing in the new laundry just up the hill and to my delight we have a flock of apostle birds playing on the ground, tussling like feathered wrestlers, and wandering about grumbling to themselves.

I’ve been journaling the flowers on this trip and a closer look at roadside weeds reveals a Monarch butterfly, swan bush, and a yellow oleander.

After lunch we drive up to the lookout and realise that we could have walked, it’s so close and not all that high either. There are fine views of the dam wall though. Officially named the Fred Haigh Dam, it was constructed between 1971 and 1975 to provide irrigation to the fruit bowl region of Bundaberg, Childers and Gin Gin. There are cabins on the hillside with lake views, and that small mob of wallabies are grazing up here now. Further along the road is the boat ramp and the water lilies are in flower.

Dinner is a delicious pork and vegetable tray bake with a Parmesan cream sauce. The nights are cool here, so it is rather cosy to have the gas oven going and smell dinner cooking. I know a lot of people don’t like to use their caravan oven. I’m not sure whether they dislike the cooking smells or they just don’t want to clean it, but we reckon if you’ve got it use it.  

Crested pigeons, apostle birds, blue face honeyeaters, an egret, and one pale headed rosella is not a bad bird count for the day.
