Continuing our tour of Burra:
In the heart of Burra township hobbit like miner’s dugouts pock the walls of the Burra Creek. When the copper mine was in operation and not enough housing available this was known as Creek Street and housed more than 1800 people in about 600 dugout homes. It’s hard to imagine for most but for men used to spending their days underground this would have been a cheap alternative to shelter their families. Consisting of a small room or two, some with white washed walls and with a little chimney poking through the sod roof this was home sweet home to many Cornish miners.

I hope it was better than the alternative in Cornwall. A tough life!

For some I doubt it got better. History says that when the copper ran out they trudged north to the silver, lead & zinc mines at Broken Hill where many died from lead poisoning.

Yes, I guess that making mud pies would have kept the kids busy.
