Yarck to Yack – Thank Goodness & Thank Gravity for The Northy

Euroa, Vic, Oct 2024

Day 3 Monday 7/10/2024 Euroa, afternoon showers 7 – 18

It’s a morning of more yacking in the sunshine, bloody hell we can talk a lot. Woody and I take a stroll along the river and find the subway under the railway line that leads to the decrepit old North Eastern Hotel, known around here as The Northy. We just want to know if it is still trading as we had a drink here a few years back and, well, it’s certainly ‘up there’ on our list of unusual pubs. You see The Northy was built in 1889 at a cost of £9000 and with 48 rooms was one of the largest hotels outside of Melbourne at the time. We’ve been in some funny old pubs all over the country, but this one really takes the cake. Bits of walls have been stripped off and some of the floor has been sanded, water pipes hang in mid-air, and yet, the front bar is still trading. Thank goodness and thank gravity for not dragging it completely down.

On the hunt for somewhere that will be open for dinner later in the week, we check out the menu at the Euroa Hotel, in the heart of town. Back at camp after lunch, rain has set in. I guess it’s time to revisit The Northy, but gee I reckon hard hats and fluoro should be mandatory. No doubt whoever decorated this place with its lace curtains and Axminster carpet would be well and truly 6 feet under by now. Bloody good pub though and a perfect spot to sit out a drizzly afternoon.

The Northy 2021 (this veranda has now gone)

On the way back to camp Elle and I make a detour to find the other bird statue in town, a blue wren at the community garden. We cook a BBQ in the camp kitchen and meet a cheery fellow who happens to be a train enthusiast from Adelaide with a passion for trestle bridges.

Accom: $49.50
