On the Road Again – Kenilworth

Day 23 Tuesday 30/6/2026 Beachmere to Kenilworth, I forgot to check the weather

Leaving our mates to their babysitting duties, we take the Bruce Hwy M1 north. Today is the last day of government 32% discounted fuel. We top up, as tomorrow the discount will drop to 16%. It’s an easy run on the highway as we’ve missed the peak. With excitement we turn off at Yandina to get some goodies from the Buderim Ginger outlet and Nutworks, the macadamia shop across the road. It takes a second for the penny to drop, bugger, it’s school holidays and there’s a sea of parked cars and littlies tootling along on the Ginger Train. I guess we’d better wait until next time.

The drive into Kenilworth is rather gorgeous as it winds through forests and farms. Old wooden Queenslanders, their small windows angled to catch the breeze overlook rolling paddocks of cows, tall hoop pines and creeks.

Trundling through town we turn into the showgrounds to find that there are only about 30 vans here. There are 170 sites. We comment to the caretaker, and she says that this is normal and that the rush will be soon. This is one of our favourite stopovers and our fifth visit. We’ve never seen it so bare, but there is an upside, we have lots of space. We just get ourselves set up and the rain starts. Rain?
