On the Road Again – Down Memory Lane

Day 22 Monday 29/6/2026 Beachmere, 12 – 21, cool and wet turns to sunny

A brisk morning walk to the foreshore reveals that yes, there’s little of that pale yellow granular stuff. Though there is a rock wall to protect the houses from high tides. It’s a damp grey morning but a rainbow can be seen over Brisbane in the distance.

This is an area that we haven’t explored so Double or Nuthin’ and Shirley Temple shove us in the Cruiser and we take a drive to the marina at Newport, followed by Scarborough and Redcliffe. Redcliffe was the home of the Bee Gees and a laneway has been turned into a tribute to their work and successes. It’s easy to forget how talented they were, and the laneway is a riot of songs, photos, statuary, and videos of their performances. It brings a tear to the eye to the dozens of people here who are captivated.

Continuing on to Woody Point we decide on lunch at the Belvedere Hotel and what a pub it is. Open to the fresh air, like so many of Qld’s pubs it looks like it has grown longer every time a neighbouring property has become available. I wonder if this is what happened as it has many building styles. There’s lots of white timber, bougainvillea trails about the greenery, the atmosphere is relaxed tropical. And then the food arrives, prawn and lobster linguine, and a Japanese inspired poke bowl for me with avocado, seaweed, pickled carrots, edamame beans, rice, sweet soy and wasabi mayonnaise, on top is a perfectly cooked slice of Atlantic Salmon. I’m happy, very happy.

Back at camp we have a quick sojourn to the local Beachmere butcher to check his wares, have a quiet happy hour (we’re stuffed) and return to the van for toasties.
