A Cool Coast – Nambucca Heads & a Grey Forecast

Day 37 Sunday 20/7/2025 Darlington Beach to Nambucca Heads, cool breeze 6 – 20 (feels like 13)

The check-in time at Ingenia White Albatross Caravan Park, Nambucca Heads, isn’t until noon, so there’s no need to rush. Our mob of kangaroos are all dozing on the lawn beside us. They’re a bit like cats, they sleep a lot but move fast when the need arises.

On our way south we drop into Aldi at Coffs Harbour for a few necessities before continuing south to Nambucca Heads.

At check-in we’re allocated a site that is far too short for us, and ours is not a large van. Still hooked on, we return to the office, this time we’re given a much more suitable site that is totally artificial grass and well situated with a view of the lagoon.

It doesn’t take us long to set up and start walking, because the walks around here are addictive. Just ask the locals. Woody takes the hill climb up the escarpment (near the flying fox colony) and into town. Nambucca Heads township straddles a steep ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean and below the winding Nambucca River creates a shallow sandy bar as it enters the sea. My walk is out along the V Wall breakwater that tames the turmoil caused by that risky dangerous sea entrance. From the wall there’s a short but captivating stretch of bushland track called the Nyambaga Trail that crosses the ridge to the north facing and often warmer, Shelly Beach.

Satisfied now that we’ve both done our favourite walks, we sit down to a warming bowl of pasta…and then, the rain starts. Here we go again.

    1. I have no idea. They do have sea eagles, yellow tailed black cockatoos, pelicans, rainbow lorikeets to name a few. I hope you don’t mind, but I looked up your train trip. My neighbour did The Ghan last year and the Indian Pacific recently and loved both immensely. I reckon we’ll be packing her off on your one next year.😊
