Day 20 Saturday 27/6/2026 Somerset Dam, 12 – 19, a short shower then sunny.
We hop up a little earlier today because we are moving to the unpowered site. It only takes a few minutes to park the vans facing each other beside a large concrete slab, and we’re done. While the others have a wander around the village which was originally built for dam construction workers and water board families. Nowadays these cottages are cute weekenders and BnB’s. I sketch the Somerset Dam general store and gallop about the park photographing mushrooms, as you do.

Back at camp we download Double or Nuthin’s grandfather’s World War One war records from the National Archives. Grandfather Fred fought in the trenches around Ypres. In the next war his son flew spitfires in the Battle of Normandy. There are so many stories in those archives. The boys light a fire and we sit about gazing at the river and the flames, and chatting until the wood runs out.
Being a Saturday, the traffic is busier with bikers and a group in a couple of tents beside us play doof, doof music all afternoon. At dusk the general Store cranks things up with a ‘singer’ and more, and even louder doof, doof music.
Ah, the serenity.
Accom: $18.50, toilets, showers

It is so impressive that the Australians rallied round in those conflicts
