Mystery Bay, NSW

Just two kilometres off the Princes Highway and roughly halfway between Central Tilba and Narooma, the Mystery Bay campground is in a grove of spotted gums with views to the pretty little bay and Montague Island in the distance. The camp is protected from most winds. There are fireplaces, drop toilets and cold showers. Other than a street light in the distance it is pitch dark at night and the only sound the surf. This is the perfect place for bracing morning walks on the beach. I love this spot.

After we stayed there I chatted to a local in nearby Tuross Head and he explained the unusual name. Apparently it was dubbed Mystery Bay after a small boat was found wrecked in 1880 with all five crew missing, never to be found.
