Griffiths Island lighthouse, Port Fairy. The lighthouse was built around 1859. The island is named after John Griffiths a sealer who founded whaling there. It is cut off from the mainland by the Moyne River. In the early days the town of Port Fairy was known as Belfast.

Why is it called Port Fairy?

The bay was named after the cutter Fairy captained by a James Wishart who sheltered from a storm in the mouth of the river Moyne around 1828. After whaling ceased in the area the town was surveyed and named Belfast. Irish immigrants were encouraged to settle. In 1857 when the town had a population of 2000 and was the 2nd busiest port in Aust. My own great great great grandparents arrived there from Kent. In 1887 the town was renamed 1887. For a time it was almost forgotten but nowadays it is a popular tourist spot and the architecture well preserved.
