Australian country towns have a wonderful history of Greek Cafes. In Bingara, NSW you’ll find a fine example of this memorable era. Tours are available and ours was conducted by a descendant of a Greek immigrant family.
Built in 1936 by three Greek migrants from Kythera, the Art Deco beauty of the Roxy has been restored by the community. Peters cafe next door was the original milk bar named after one of the partners. Within the complex there is a Greek museum to the hardworking Greeks who ran cafes throughout Australia serving Australian meals. Steak, mixed grills, baked beans on toast, malted milks and the like. The theatre and cafe are both trading.

What a fabulous find, must put it on our list for next time we are passing that way.

A priceless slice of history and of course at one time almost every country town had a Greek cafe/milk bar. It’s so good to see it preserved.
